Birds Eye 10 Original Beef Burgers

Comfort food extraordinaire, the humble burger is actually a European invention (propelled to new heights by Americans). In UK alone, we annually spend over £3 billion on burgers, and there's an ever growing fascination with new blends of meat, cooking techniques and customisation at gourmet burger restaurants.

What makes a good burger?
A delicious and classic 'no-frills' beef burger has high proportion of good-quality, carefully sourced, high fat (about 20%) ground beef that delivers a tender and succulent patty. Historically, a sprinkle of flour or breadcrumb is added to seal in those juices, and a touch of simple salt and cracked black pepper will expel excess water and let those flavours shine. Lastly, a fresh cracked egg will bind the mince as it's lovingly hand pressed and moulded into a patty, about the size of your palm.

Health Advice
The Food Standards Agency has advised home cooks to heat their burgers all the way through to the middle, as the harmful bacteria inside will not be destroyed until fully cooked.

For all those times when you want the simplicity of a store-bought burger rather than making your own, our team of tasters sampled the best on the supermarket shelves, looking for a patty that was juicy, meaty and bursting with rich flavour.

1 Sainsbury's British Ultimate Beef Burgers Taste the Difference

Score: 76/100

The gorgeous, caramelised aroma of this burger hints at the well-seasoned, oniony taste to come. Juicy, moist and full of flavour, the thick and chunky burger is quite herby on the palate and wonderfully meaty.

2 Waitrose Heston 2 Ultimate Beef Burgers

Score: 72/100

Heston's burgers brown extremely well - ideal for the barbecue. We could taste the quality and richness of the beef, and the coarse texture gives the burger a lovely, home-made rustic appeal. Though lightly seasoned with salt and pepper, the burger is a touch too bland. Some of our testers found it disappointingly dry and a little on the coarse side.

3 Aldi Specially Selected Aberdeen Angus Gourmet Burger

Score: 71/100

Availble in shops only.

A great patty made with lean-tasting Aberdeen Angus beef that is perfectly thick and juicy. However, the natural flavours of the meat are overshadowed by the heavy peppery taste. The burgers grill well, ending up a lovely browned colour, but were a bit too greasy for some testers.

4 Waitrose 2 Hand Pressed Highland Beef Burgers

Score: 71/100

Gently seasoned, with well-balanced flavours, the quality of the Angus beef really comes through here, and the patty browns well on the grill. Some testers felt it was quite chewy, though.

5 Tesco Finest Beef Steak Burgers

Score: 71/100

Plump, juicy meat that would sit well in a fluffy, white burger bap or dressed up with chunky coleslaw. Our testers, however, were not as keen on the flavour. Many found the patty too bland and it seemed more of a carrier of other flavours. The burger was also a tad on the greasy side, releasing lots of fat.

6 Morrisons The Best 4 Scotch Beef Quarter Pounders

Score: 67/100

This is a tempting and chunky patty that's subtle in taste. We loved the balanced meat flavour and the finely diced onion pieces that added texture and flavour to the otherwise dry burger. We think the 21-day aged Scotch beef, unfortunately, may have lost too much moisture in the drying process.

7 Ocado Gold 4 Quarter Pounders Angus Beef Burgers

Score: 66/100

We were drawn in by the caramalised aroma of this burger but, disappointingly, the enjoyment ends there. While the patty looks tasty and meaty, our panel found it quite dry, chewy and lacking in flavour.

Price: £3.00

8 Co-op Irresistible Hereford 2 Beef Burgers

Score: 63/100

Available in shops only.

Lovely and thick, there is a good combination of meat and fat, and the burger caramelises beautifully on the outside. A light touch of cracked black pepper gives this patty a bit of a kick that adds a subtle heat, but sadly it's otherwise bland.

9 Gourmet Burger Kitchen 2 Beef Burgers

Score: 58/100

Mildly flavoured, with a hint of black pepper and salt. This burger has a fresh, beefy aroma but is disappointingly thin and chewy. Sadly, the meat is quite bitty and breaks apart in the mouth too quickly. However, we were very impressed with this burger's short ingredients list, it's just Angus beef, salt and black pepper, and no antioxidants or preservatives.

Price: £4.49

Available from: ocado.com

10 Birds Eye 12 Original Beef Burgers

Score: 54/100

While it's reminiscent of quick childhood dinners, it sadly didn't deliver on flavour, despite having all the complementary ingredients. The overpowering onion taste was a turn-off for many testers, as was the thinness of the burger. It's dry-looking, yet softer in texture than some others tested. The patty is over-processed and anything but meaty.

Price: £4.00

11 Asda 4 Quarter Pounder Beef Burgers

Score: 48/100

Not the moreish, juicy offering you would expect from a burger. Many testers found the burger very chewy and lacking in savoury notes, despite being seasoned with salt and pepper.

Price: £2.50

Available from: asda.com
